2008 Calf Watch
Click on the Calf watch link to see if we have any newborn calves to announce!
We generally give the mother and calf 12-24 hours to form a strong bond before we tag and weigh the newborn. If we process the calf too soon, we risk the cow abandoning her calf. If we wait too long, the calf becomes extremely mobile and it could be stressful catching it to tag and weigh. Once a calf is tagged, its information is entered into our database & the calf watch list is be updated.

First Handling for 2007 Calves.
We weighed all of our animals including this year's calves on May 16 & 17th. It was the first handling for our 2007 calves, which can be chaotic if things are not done slowly and methodically. We brought animals into our pocket in small groups of 4 to 8 animals and took our time getting each animal on the scale one at a time. The majority of our animals were very calm and most of the calves were herded onto the scale without having to grab hold of them. All in all it was one of the easiest and most efficient handlings we've had for new bunch of calves. The heaviest calf at this handling weighed in at 22.5 kilos, having gained 15.5 kilos since his birth on April 15th!

Our New Look!
We've been working for a long time behind the scenes on creating our new web layout. Although we still have content that needs work, we felt it was time to launch! Our new layout really highlights the Reindeer Research Programs key mission components & provides menus to navigate through all our content. Please feel free to let us know what you think about the new design via our guestbook.
